Meet Liberty.me: B.K. Marcus, Our Liberty.me Senior Editor

The Liberty.me team is comprised of talented, exceptional individuals spanning the globe from Vancouver to Shanghai, Prague to Singapore, California to Texas, and Ohio to Florida. We represent every demographic and range of liberty-minded philosophy and thought. At Skybar, your place for all updates on Liberty.me, we are excited to introduce a new team member every week until you’ve met us all. Today we’re introducing B. K. Marcus, “Chief Bookworm” of Liberty.me. Our Library and Liberty Guides are made available to you all thanks to him and his colleagues at Invisible Order.   Tell us about yourself, B.K.! I was born in New York City in the Summer of Love. Across the river, there were race riots… I’m a father, a husband, a bookworm, and a scribbler, probably in that order. I used to be a coder and a web developer. Before that I was a philosophy major. And before that I was outspoken and confused. Actually, I was outspoken and confused when I was a philosophy major, too. I’m less outspoken now. My favorite things to read and write about are, to borrow from Ludwig von Mises‘ title, theory and history — both of which I like to approach from unexpected angles.  …

Meet Liberty.me: Josh Holden, One of Our Summer Interns

The Liberty.me team is comprised of talented, exceptional individuals spanning the globe from Vancouver to Shanghai, Prague to Singapore, California to Texas, and Ohio to Florida. We represent every demographic and range of liberty-minded philosophy and thought. At Skybar, your place for all updates on Liberty.me, we are excited to introduce a new team member every week until you’ve met us all. Up next is Josh Holden, the first of several bearded interns yet to come. Among other things, Josh is helping the Liberty.me community get to know the team better by doing his part to prepare interviews just like this one. This “bartender” asks all the questions around here… except this time, that is.   Tell us about yourself, Josh! I’m from a place people call “North Carolina,” just one of many similar states with random borders. I may have been raised in the south, but I wasn’t born here. Nope, I was born smack-dab in the middle of Europe; it was still known as “West Germany” back then. My parents were Americans, but my father was stationed there at the time. It’s strange to think my place of birth was determined, in part, by US foreign policy; but then again, whose…

Meet Liberty.me: Matt Gilliland, Our Liberty.me U Program Coordinator

The Liberty.me team is comprised of talented, exceptional individuals spanning the globe from Vancouver to Shanghai, Prague to Singapore, California to Texas, and Ohio to Florida. We represent every demographic and range of liberty-minded philosophy and thought. At Skybar, your place for all updates on Liberty.me, we are excited to introduce a new team member every week until you’ve met us all. Next in line is our very own Liberty.me U Program Coordinator, the host with the most, Matt Gilliland. When it comes to scheduling classes, he’s “the decider.”   Tell us about yourself, Matt! I’m from a small town in Eastern North Carolina called Rocky Mount. As I look back now that I’m a libertarian, I can see in hindsight that I had libertarian leanings from an early age, but what really did it for me was doing an undergraduate degree in Political Science. See, every professor in the program had his or her pet peeve about the system — one area of government that they could clearly show was either ineffective or harmful. By senior year, I began to realize that after being convinced by all these professors about the inefficacy of the individual parts of the system, I no longer…

Hot Liberty Content – Liberty.me’s Top 5 Articles

Hot Liberty Content – Liberty.me’s Top 5 Articles

We are constantly blown away by the incredible quality of articles that our members push out each and every day. As such, we’re always looking for ways to further showcase this great writing and get our authors the recognition they deserve. Note: No member of the Liberty.me team is eligible to be on the list.  This is about recognizing the phenomenal work of our members. 1) I’m in a First Amendment Legal Battle Over My Parodies. Again. by Dan McCall. Dan, the creator of the NSA parody shirts, is being sued for another parody he made, comparing Hillary Clinton’s campaign to oligarchy.  Ms. Clinton is less than happy that people want to exercise their free speech.  Dan’s message to her: bring it. 2) The Boy Who Never Went to School by Joe Kent. Joe tells the story of Christian, a boy who was never officially schooled–either by public schools or at home.  And yet, he devours complex books, taught himself Latin, and has phenomenal business savvy.  By the time he was 17, he was running his own business with 5 employees.  Formal education is not for everyone. 3) Like What You Hate: Countering the Echo Chamber of Social Media By…

Meet Liberty.me: Julian Adorney, Our Outreach Coordinator

The Liberty.me team is comprised of talented, exceptional individuals spanning the globe from Vancouver to Shanghai, Prague to Singapore, California to Texas, and Ohio to Florida. We represent every demographic and range of liberty-minded philosophy and thought. At Skybar, your place for all updates on Liberty.me, we are excited to introduce a new team member every week until you’ve met us all. This week, we’ll be getting to know Mr. Julian Adorney — outreach extraordinaire. Julian has been a key player in fostering a positive relationship between our wonderful community and the public.   Tell us about yourself, Julian! I was a devout Progressive until I was 18; I even campaigned for Obama and went to CU Boulder. But not having had a real job ever, I was living in a fantasy world where government was free or dirt cheap. My break with that came from my first girlfriend in college, who revealed that taxes weren’t the 5-10% range I naively assumed; they were 30-50% or more all told. That’s appalling.  I quickly discovered Ayn Rand, attended the Leadership Institute to get free pizza, and started reading Hazlitt.  Once I read Economics In One Lesson, I was hooked.   How did you get involved…

Meet Liberty.me: Marianne Copenhaver, Our Digital Media Director

The Liberty.me team is comprised of talented, exceptional individuals spanning the globe from Vancouver to Shanghai, Prague to Singapore, California to Texas, and Ohio to Florida. We represent every demographic and range of liberty-minded philosophy and thought. At Skybar, your place for all updates on Liberty.me, we are excited to introduce a new team member every week until you’ve met us all. First up, Ms. Marianne Copenhaver, also known as Libertarian Girl. A talented graphic designer and social media expert, Mari has been instrumental in helping us develop a fresh, vibrant branding campaign that’s just getting started.   Tell us about yourself, Marianne!  I’m from Ohio. After high school I moved all over the east coast and now I’m back in good ol’ Ohio. I was a pre-k teacher for years, I’ve studied  almost everything you can think of in college, and now I’ve sort of fallen into this role as a political commentator, entrepreneur, and digital  media director. It’s been one hell of a ride and I wouldn’t change a thing. I had always been a libertarian. I really just didn’t know there was a name for people like me. I was raised with a healthy skepticism of government and after I…

Does Liberty.me Censor?

Does Liberty.me Censor?

Liberty.me is a radical experiment in trust — very much like a free society itself.  Our whole structure is premised on that idea. In the old-fashioned model of a website, there is a content provider and a content consumer. It’s mostly a one-way relationship. Most institutions would never consider any other idea. But as the digital world has evolved, we see that the groundbreaking spaces out there — from Wikipedia to Twitter — crowdsource information and create an infrastructure for complex networks of communication. Liberty.me is applying that open idea to liberty itself. Just as with open-source software, we trust the stakeholders of the digital space to be productive members of this community, adding value in every imaginable way. There are no guaranteed or planned outcomes, no impositions of any particular vision. Does that sound slightly dangerous? Absolutely!  But with risk comes reward. You can see for yourself the quality and diversity of content on Liberty.me. It’s amazing what happens when you sweep aside the gatekeepers. People have asked whether Liberty.me censors its members’ content.  Liberty.me is a completely open forum where anyone can voice any perspective they wish.  We encourage our members to advance, develop and challenge ideas at…

Welcome to Skybar, your source for things Liberty.me!

Welcome to Skybar, your source for things Liberty.me!

Welcome to Skybar, your home for updates by Team Liberty.me. In so many ways this community is an experiment. We like to believe it’s an investigation into the very essence of ideas, into humanity, into love, and especially into exciting application! Certainly it’s an experiment in liberty itself. Searching out one’s dreams and finding ways to insert them into this complex reality we call life might be the ultimate test of the human spirit. For us and for our CLO, Jeffrey Tucker, this is our test. We view our business as a test of not only ourselves, but the market we are helping to inspire — a test of the ideas that have guided our pursuit of liberty and our vision of life itself. More than anything though, Liberty.me is about a community of individuals where each “I” is just as important as the larger “us.” The functionality of Liberty.me is an aspiring enterprise with a deeply romantic and yet fiercely practical vision, but it’s far more than the sum of its parts. It’s the means and the ends, and the fuel to get us where we want to go is found in the relationships built, the knowledge shared —…
